CGA Recognizes Leaders in Safety at the Annual SAFE Awards

The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) proudly recognizes the recipients of the 2019 Safety Awards for Excellence. These awards are presented annually at CGA’s Operations, Engineering, Integrity and Construction Conference (OEIC Conference) to individuals or groups who demonstrate outstanding dedication to safety. CGA member organizations recognized this year are AltaGas Utilities Inc., Enbridge Gas Inc., Énergir, FortisBC and the City of Medicine Hat.

The Public Safety Award was presented to Shane Milner of AltaGas Utilities Inc. Milner was instrumental in supporting AltaGas Utilities’ natural gas distribution and high pressure system during the Chuckegg Creek wildfire in 2019. Enbridge Gas Inc. also received a Certificate of Recognition under the Public Safety category for its nomination, Enbridge Enterprise Emergency Response Team (E3RT).

Enbridge Gas Inc. was awarded the Worker Safety Award for its Safety Leadership in Action (SLIA) program. With the integration of Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas, a new cohesive program was developed in late 2018 and relaunched officially in 2019. The SLIA was created to provide an accessible and transparent platform that ensures safety leadership across all divisions of the organization. Énergir and FortisBC Inc. also received Certificates of Recognition under the category of Worker Safety.

Geoff Gawne, Operations Supervisor – Field, FortisBC Inc., was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his over 40 years of service to the oil and gas industry. Not only has Gawne focused on safety and innovation in his career at FortisBC, in the early 1980s he became a volunteer firefighter and developed firefighting training programs for emergency scenarios involving gas. These training programs still go on to this day and Gawne plays an instrumental role in the planning and teaching process.

The City of Medicine Hat received the Corporate Safety Award for Employee Safety and Enbridge Gas Inc. received the Corporate Safety Award for Vehicular SafetyBoth of these awards were provided in recognition of the utilities’ track records for reducing worker injuries and vehicle damages over the past year.
