Beyond Billboards: First Nations Safety Sign Art Project
In Saskatchewan, there are 52 First Nation communities that rely on natural gas as their primary fuel source. Permanent billboards were installed in each community in the 1990s to provide both preventative and solution focused awareness regarding living and working around natural gas infrastructure. The billboards feature two of SaskEnergy’s core safety messages: ‘dig safely’ and ‘If you smell natural gas…’
Over the years, imagery and messages on the billboards have aligned with the standard mass market approach and were not designed with specific audiences in mind. The Business Communications team identified a gap with this approach and saw an opportunity to foster engagement with the Indigenous community and influence how the safety messages would resonate with Indigenous customers.
As a team, a project was initiated to revitalize safety signs in gasified First Nations communities and increase awareness of the importance of safety messages through art and cultural connection. The project team consulted with SaskEnergy’s Indigenous Engagement team to help select and commission an Indigenous artist, Jade Roberts. The project team worked with SaskEnergy field technicians throughout the province to complete the installation of a total of 104 signs in 52 communities.

Chris also trained operators on troubleshooting and maintaining the skid before it was adopted for maintenance tasks within the station.
