CGA welcomes Sunrise Expansion approval as a key step toward strengthening energy security at home and abroad

The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) welcomes the Government of Canada’s approval of Enbridge’s Sunrise Expansion Program in British Columbia and congratulates Enbridge and its partners on advancing this important project.

New data from Statistics Canada show that natural gas production, exports and domestic demand are all rising, underscoring the essential role this energy plays across Canada’s economy. Natural gas heats homes, supports businesses and fuels critical services such as hospitals and schools, particularly during periods of peak demand.

As Canada looks to strengthen its role as a global energy supplier, including through LNG development, the foundation must be a strong and reliable domestic energy system. Expanding critical natural gas infrastructure is key to ensuring Canadians have access to energy that is affordable, reliable and available when it is needed most.

Projects like Sunrise increase system capacity and support industrial growth, while also reinforcing the resilience of Canada’s existing energy network. They are an important step in enabling Canada to meet both domestic and international energy needs.

Natural gas is foundational to Canada’s energy system and a key enabler of economic growth. Strengthening infrastructure ensures Canada can continue to deliver energy for Canadians—while supporting its role as a trusted energy partner to the world.
