CGA statement on Alberta-Federal MOU on energy infrastructure development

The Canadian Gas Association notes with interest the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta. The fact that the two governments are talking about working together to develop Canada’s hydrocarbon resources for Canadian and global prosperity is welcome, and it bodes well for efforts to build energy infrastructure.

This is important because Canada needs more energy infrastructure. In the natural gas industry, over 600,000 kilometres of transmission and delivery infrastructure ensure Canadians have affordable and reliable energy for industry, business, and homes. Our infrastructure is delivering roughly 40% of our country’s energy. But a growing population, growing demand for energy for new technologies and services, and growing export opportunities, all mean we need to build more and to build it more quickly.

The more governments in Canada can do to send signals that the country wants more energy infrastructure, the better – for our security, for our long-term competitiveness, and for the well-being of all Canadians.
